Medieval Music

What is secular music?
Secular music is the simply music that does not promote with any religion practice or tradition. Music can be either secular or religious. Religious music might include praise and worship songs. Secular music might include rock, pop, hip hop, rap, country, opera, jazz etc. The major music in the modern world is secular. Intent and lyrical content are usually more important than musical style when determining whether music is or is not secular.

This division is not necessarily product of a the structure of modern musical forms, however. Music may be composed and performed in a predominantly secular style but designed to convey a religious message. Christian rock music, for example, draw on the musical traditions of rock and roll, but blends them with themes and lyrics drawn from Christian scripture and doctrine.

What is Medieval Music?
Mediaeval music is Western music written during the Middle Ages. It was both religious and secular. Music of the Middle Ages was especially popular during times of celebration and festivities.

How and where medieval music was developed?
During the Medieval period, the foundation was laid for the notational and theoretical practices that would shape western music into what it is today.

The traditions of Western music can be traced back to the social and religious developments that took place in Europe during the Middle Ages, because the domination of the early Catholic Church during this period, religious music was the most prevalent.

Beginning with Gregorian chant, religious music slowly developed into a polyphonic music called organum performed at Notre Dame in Paris by the twelfth century.

The secular music also developed in the hands of the French Trouvère and troubadours, until the period culminated with the sacred and secular compositions of the first true genius of Western music, Guillaume de Machaut.

Samba instrument

Interesting fact about the rhythm section of a samba school (Batelia da escola de samba)

l   The samba school’s drum section, or bateria, is composed of more than 50 drummers

l   They primarily play samba, but the rhythms they play are not exclusive to Rio.

l   Common samba is characterized by 2 and 4 beats, one muted and one main. The cavaquinho, a very important instrument that served as a precursor to the ukulele, links the harmony and rhythm sections of common samba music. Most of the percussion is provided by tambourine drums that feature prominently in Samba music.

About favorite samba percussion instrument

My favorite samba percussion instrument is tambourine,
because it is very difficult, but it is very fun.
It needs to move my hand softly and I want to manage it.

The tambourine is a usical instrument  in the percussion family
and it is the smallest of all drums within a Samba-School drum section
and also lights, but it has a distinct sound.
It constructed from a frame (often of wood or plastic) with
pairs of small metal jingle, called "zils".
We can hit the head with great skill,
using an aggregate of taps, slaps, rim shots and rolls to make sounds.
In samba it is used to highlight the strongest parts of a tune,
providing punctuation for the melody.

It often used with regular percussion sets and they can be mounted, but position is largely down to preference. It much used in bands playing many distinct styles of Brazilian music, in Samba Schools and in Capoeira.

Art - MOVIE -

Today we presented our movie and our sketch book.
Also we saw other group’s work.

Sketch Book:

We showed and explained “Brain storm page”,
“story board”, “planning page”, “process page” and "
evaluation page”.
Brain Storm page is about brave, confidents.
The story board page is about story of our movie,
and planning page is about plan,
for example what we are going to use and how to make it.
Process page is about steps that the way we make movie.
Evaluation page is about our projects and
I wrote WWW (What Went Well), EBI (even Better if)
and problem and how to solve it.

Other Group’s work:

We saw 3 other movie today that other group made.
I think all movies are very interesting and it very different.
I surprised that we could made completely different one
even though we have the same theme.
I also thought that the one which made from 3D material is
very interesting and fun, because
they used camera angle well and back music is very effectively.
The movie which was made by Maria’s group was also
very simple but it was very nice.

Process Page 4

Today, we edited our pictures.
We added musics and think about timing.
It was difficult to fix music, because
we have to choose music that related to picture or scene.
we chose a sound like airplane and dramatic action.

The problem is that we could not finish
editting process.
We need to record our voice and put it in our movie,
so we have to do it in break or lunch time.

Process Page3

Today, we edited our pictures.
We could not find the movie that we made last lesson,
so we decided to make new one.
We made last lesson, so we could make easier and faster.

Here are some pictures that we took last lesson and 2 weeks ago:

I think if I use pen fo background, it will be more clear
and also if we make face expression,
it will become more interesting.

Process page2

Today, we were going to take photos and
edit our photos that we took last lesson and today.

The first half, we took photos and it was little bit difficult,
because the lights and direction should be the same as last lesson
as we did, and also it was difficult to make objects move.

The other half, we did editing. We used Angela’s laptop
and it was very diificult to edit, because
I have not made a movie before.  In the editing,
we had a problem. We zoomed each photo and we can’t change it.

The next lesson, we will edit again and also
we are thinking about ending and if we have time,
we will take photos for the ending.
